The AMQF hosted a talk between Palestinian artist Majd Abdel Hamid and Brazilian artist Jian Sapina, recently, on the context of artwork production, using the latter’s works as material for discussion.
During the talk, Sabina presented some of his experiences and artworks, which he then discussed with Abdel Hamid and members of the audience.
“It is essential to learn the experiences of people and artists from different parts of the world,” said Abdel Hamid. “I hope we can also have this kind of conversation with artists from the Arab world, even if the only way possible is Skype. These encounters open the path for many real discussions and further dialogue, away from mere oration”.
Abdel Hamid’s works explore issues of national identity, cynicism, conflict, shock and time. Abdel Hamid uses several media in his art including videos, embroideries, sculptures and public space interventions, among other things.
Sabina is currently a resident artist at the International Academy of Art, Palestine. He has collaborated with many artists from around the world. His artworks and research combines several disciplines. “This is a good chance for me to meet the Palestinian public for the first time,” said Sabina. “When two artists from different worlds have a discussion, the dialogue becomes richer.”
Yazid Anani, the Director of AMQF Public Program, said that this talk is part of a series organized by the Public Program and that it is inspired from AMQF role as a hub for knowledge in all cultural fields. “Our series of talks seeks to ensure knowledge exchange and dialogue with international artists,” he added. “These conversations are also a chance to discuss any preconceived notions that may be held by international artists about art and culture here, and about Palestine in general.”
